Artifact Overview
Thomas Edison began producing equipment to meet users' electrical power needs after his successful experiments with electricity generation and transmission. The Edison Machine Works in New York City manufactured various direct-current dynamos for commercial use in the early 1880s. Grinnell Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts, purchased this six-field-coil Type K dynamo (one of several) in 1882 to light its facilities.
