Artifact Overview

This pro-Whig campaign novelty from the 1848 Presidential campaign depicts a brutish-looking "Locofoco" praising his Democratic candidate, Lewis Cass. Locofocos were once members of a small radical faction of the Democratic Party, but Whigs began applying the term to Democrats as a whole. Pull the paper tab, and the Locofoco's expression changes when he learns the Whig candidate, Zachary Taylor ("Old Zack"), was elected.
