Ford Motor Company inaugurated a system of competing dealership franchises in 1914. Dealers sold Ford vehicles, offered repair services, and stocked spare parts and accessories. The 1930s and early 1940s were challenging times as dealers first struggled through the Great Depression and then found themselves with no new cars during World War II when automakers focused exclusively on military production.
