Edison L-Type Bipolar Dynamo, Used at the Arnold Print Works, 1882

Thomas Edison began producing equipment to meet users' electrical power needs after his successful experiments with electricity generation and transmission. The Edison Machine Works in New York City manufactured this Type L direct-current dynamo with four field coils--a larger variant of its two-field-coil Type Z--for commercial use in the early 1880s. The Arnold Print Works in Massachusetts purchased this dynamo to light its facilities.
