Small traveling circuses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries arrived in towns with great fanfare. Parades, usually led by a bandwagon, announced that the circus was in town. This free publicity, circus owners hoped, would arouse the public's interest. This photograph shows the bandwagon from Mat Wixom's circus, which visited rural Michigan communities between 1874 and 1908.
