When seat belts became standard equipment in the 1960s, most people refused to use them — despite new research proving that seat belt use could prevent injury or death during automobile accidents. For decades, lawmakers and automakers alike failed to persuade a stubborn public. But education and time eventually won out, and most states had seatbelt laws by the late 1980s.
